Tradition. The history of Cameos

The ancient art of cameos comes to life from shells carving and craftsmanship.

Indeed, by the term cameo is meant the workmanship, not the material on which this is carried out.

Trips to the discover of new lands brought new materials to Europe, including several shells: the “Sardinia” from Caribbean Sea, the “Corniola” of African origin and the “Madreperla”.

Cameos was exported from Italy to markets all over the world, since the 18th century, period in which the shells cameos production flourished.

Italy, but most of all Naples, is still now the only centre of production.
